Why Do Hairstylists Wear Black?

Women who wear black live colorful lives. -Neiman Marcus

Hairstylists wear black. Yeah, it’s a thing. It’s not like we all called each other this morning and said, “hey, what are you wearing today?” It just happens. We all seem to do it, and yeah, I do it too. I’ve been a hairstylist for 35 years, and for most of my days in the salon, I’ve worn black. When Hairstylists look in their closets, from left to right…yeah, it’s black.

But really, Hairstylists wearing black is so ridiculously practical for 3 stellar reasons.

Color and Chemicals Ruin Clothes

We can’t help it, we get a lot of color on our clothes. As Hairstylists, the name of the game is color. We cover up our guests with capes for a good reason. I can’t even tell you how many times I’ve turned around and the next thing you know, I have a stripe of color across my pants. So, needless to say, wearing black saves the day! And if you get a bleach spot? Easily remedied with a black sharpie marker.

Black Never Goes Out of Style

Black is not seasonal, or trending. It is chic, sophisticated, and slimming. It is easy to dress up or down, and if you change your shoes, and add some accessories, you can completely change the look of your outfit

I’ll stop wearing black when they make a darker color.

Black is a Neutral Backdrop

Wearing black serves as a neutral backdrop with our clients. The thing is, as Hairstylists, our entire work day is lived in front of a gigantic mirror. When we wear black, and we look in the mirror, we don’t clash with the hair, clothes, or makeup of our clients. We become less visually distracting and our black creates a neutral, non-competing backdrop for our guests.

As Hairstylists, black is not required, but it is our friend! Lol. It is amazing all the looks you can get out of a black wardrobe. It’s so easy to mix and match, and such a relief when that flick of color doesn’t ruin your new blouse. Black IS the perfect color.

Black is infinitely chic, undeniably mysterious, and deeply misunderstood.
